Captain John C. Timmel is a master mariner with more than thirty years of seafaring experience. He has been a harbor pilot with the Tampa Bay Pilot Association since 1989, during which time he has served in leadership and as Director of Deputy Training. As founder and president of Starboard Ten Maritime Forensics, Captain Timmel has been providing litigation support services and maritime expert witness testimony in admiralty cases since 1995. In addition, he has been very active in the maritime industry as well as in the yachting and boating communities in numerous ways and capacities. This experience, along with his capability to explain complex concepts in a clear and cogent manner, uniquely qualify Captain Timmel to render litigation support and compelling forensic testimony in commercial and non-commercial maritime cases as either a plaintiff or defense expert. He has testified before U.S. Congressional committees and the National Academy of Science and served as an Adjunct Professor of seamanship, shiphandling and watchstanding aboard New York maritime’s training ship.

Captain Timmel’s experiences, background and training provide him unique qualifications and the knowledge to render advice, guidance, opinions, and to provide expert testimony in matters of commercial marine operations and yachting and pleasure-craft practice. He explains complex technical terms, concepts and phenomena in a credible manner easily understood by non-mariners. Captain Timmel has been retained as both a plaintiff and defense expert witness in a wide variety of maritime cases. When retained as a trial consultant, Captain Timmel provides valuable knowledge, insight and maritime forensic guidance making him an indispensable member of a client’s legal team.
